SMI has determined through research in the medical arena that gaining a comprehensive understanding of a patient's metabolic rate can serve as a meaningful backdrop against which the patient can accurately measure progress toward weight loss or health enhancement goals. The systems and procedures implemented are not new to the science, but to the physical therapy arena. SMI is aggregating tools and capabilities that are generally only available in the research hospital or institutional setting and making them available to a wider audience.

An American College of Preventive Medicine, Practice Policy Statement, from 2001 states that, "Despite the escalating prevalence of obesity, physicians and healthcare providers have no proven intervention with evidence of long-term success to offer." Furthermore, the statement continues, "There is no convincing evidence for the consistent effectiveness of any single, currently used, weight-loss method." Meanwhile, 64% of the adult U.S. population is overweight or obese and studies indicate this may balloon to 90% in two generations.

Built around metabolic testing technology, and combining a variety of effective clinical strategies, the SMI offering gives physical therapists the means to uniquely employ their high level of training in exercise physiology and medical science. Their close relationship with the medical community as ancillary medical professionals benefits their ability to handle the problems with treating overweight and obese patients in a safe and effective fashion, and within the medical model. The Smart Metabolism program employs metabolic testing, exercise supervision and customized exercise programming as effective tools to help people regain control of their wellbeing.

How do PT's participate?

  • They test their patients using the equipment, tools and training provided by SMI.

  • They monitor the patient's results, re-test and recalibrate based on re-testing.

What is the benefit to PT's?

  • They can deepen their existing client relationships, extending revenue opportunities.
  • Additionally, our customers are learning that their existing referring physicians are increasing their referrals to PT's who can differentiate themselves in this manner.

Why is the program valuable to PT's?

The Smart Metabolism model serves as an excellent marketing tool, enabling physical therapists to get into communication with physicians on a subject that they care deeply about – the pre-diabetic patient, the majority of their patients, who are obese. As a marketing tool supplemental to expanding the physical therapists' practice, helping people get control of their expanding waist lines offers clinics a chance to add a cash paying service. Also, the model allows the clinic to increase the billing value of un-licensed staff as both test technicians and personal fitness trainers.

Enlisting the SMI business opportunity includes the purchase of testing and exercise products and training that could prove supplemental to business success. As a marketing tool, SMI program increases the access to the physician with a real interest in helping their patients get control of their health.  By broadening and strengthening the referring physician relationship, PT's can create an opportunity to generate increased business.

Incidentally, the business model can work as a cash-based business and for several reasons, including that physician-prescribed weight loss programs are tax deductible. Furthermore, if the patient has a medical savings account or a flexible spending account (Section 125), they can use those pre-tax dollars to pay for enrollment in the program.

How Can PT's subscribe?

SMI offers its regimen on a license basis. For signing a license and paying the fees, the PT clinic will receive the necessary equipment and training to incorporate the SMI program into their business. By signing as few as four customers per month to the program, a clinic can fully recoup its startup costs. Please contact us to learn more about the license program: sales@smartmetabolism.com.
